G-POD contribution for Sentinel-3 engineering
2007-09-06
The goal of this study is to estimate the sea surface wind speed under cloud-free conditions to globally determine the impact of wind speed in the sunglint extent. Results will be used for the refinements of the requirements of the optical payload of GMES Sentinel-3. The extent and radiance level of the sunglint over the oceans critically depends on the sea surface wind speed. However, the wind speed regime depends on the latitude and varies throughout the year because it depends on weather conditions. Since optical images of sea surface can only be possible under cloud-free conditions, the knowledge of the extent of the winds statistics and wind clouds correlation of the sunglint under these conditions will be a design driver for optical payloads and it will also impose stringent conditions on the design of the whole mission. It is therefore imperative to have an estimation of the value of the wind speed under cloud free conditions for the proper, accurate and optimum design of any optical ocean mission. Sentinel 3 mission will benefit from the outputs of this study by decreasing the degree of uncertainty on this topic.
